How the Covid-19 lockdown gave an Auckland couple control of their future
When Sam Thorburn got made redundant during the first Covid-19 lockdown, her prospects at finding employment looked grim. Faced with an increasing supply of candidates applying for the same jobs, Sam used the lockdown time to research all options available, thinking of it as an opportunity to completely change course.
“Thankfully I was able to use the lockdown time and the wage subsidy to have a good think about what I was going to do next’ said Sam, “my partner Matt and I decided to look at owning a business together. We both liked the idea of working outdoors, which also would help me stay fit.
So why did they choose a Green Acres Lawn & Garden franchise?
Matt and Sam were attracted to working independently and at their own pace, but having the back up and support of a well known brand behind them so they could start in a much stronger position than going it alone.
“We found the cost of the franchise, together with the system, the benefits and the support that it was the best option for our investment.”
And since starting a few months ago, they’ve been kept busy with a steady stream of leads provided by the system allowing them to grow at a pace that works for them.
“The support from our business advisor and other local franchisees has been great, plus the systems provided allow us to do all the admin from anywhere on an ipad which makes the business so much more flexible”
Now working hours that suit the young couple, they have their sights set on expansion to their team and a ride-on mower to make jobs more efficient.
Sam’s advice to anyone who has been made redundant recently is to take the time to figure out what it is you really want and don’t hesitate to ask for help.
If you’ve been forced into a redundant rethink on your career, why don’t you find out how owning your own Green Acres franchise could give you more control over your future.
